The short version
- There are four ways a Mac can earn on its own: sharing internet bandwidth, mining coins, renting out compute, and running AI work.
- None of them is a salary. Earnings are small, they vary, and some are paid in tokens whose price moves.
- Apple Silicon's real strength is AI: fast shared memory at low power. Work that uses it pays the Mac for what it is good at.
- MLX Node is free, runs AI work only within the limits you set, and earns MLX Tokens.
1Four ways a Mac can earn
1. Sharing your internet connection
Bandwidth-sharing apps route other companies' web traffic through your connection, typically for data collection or ad verification, and pay you per gigabyte. They use almost no processor, so earnings depend on your connection and location, not on your Mac. Read what traffic passes through your IP address before you install one.
2. Mining coins
Your Mac guesses hashes for a cryptocurrency. For Bitcoin this is pointless on a Mac, and for coins mined on ordinary processors earnings are usually below the electricity cost. Our guide to mining on a Mac has the numbers.
3. Renting out compute
Marketplaces rent your machine's processor or graphics card to people who need it. Most are built around Nvidia graphics cards and Windows or Linux, so Macs are rarely supported or rarely chosen. See selling computing power.
4. Running AI work
A network sends your Mac AI jobs, such as running a language model on a prompt, and pays for verified results. This is the one that fits Apple Silicon, because language models need exactly what Macs have: lots of fast memory shared by the processor and graphics.
2How MLX Node earns
MLX Network pools Macs into one AI supercomputer. MLX Node lives in the menu bar. When it works, it runs AI jobs with Apple's MLX framework, other Macs check the answers, and every hour the network pays MLX Tokens for the verified work.
- Free. The app costs nothing and never asks for payment to mine.
- On your terms. New installs start in manual mode: once your Mac is linked and plugged in, MLX Node works within your limits until you press Stop. You can instead let it work only after the Mac has been idle, and it pauses when the Mac gets warm.
- Visible. Every Mac appears on MLX World, and every reward is on the public explorer.
- Remote control. MLX.app for iPhone and iPad shows your Macs, pauses or resumes them and tells you when one stops.
On a free seat, a Mac mines up to 1 MLX a day. A dedicated seat matched to its chip multiplies that, from 4 MLX a day with a Nano seat to 320 with an Ultra seat. A seat works like a stake: it reserves your Mac's place on the network and sets its share of each hour's rewards. Mined MLX unlocks 30 days after the day it's earned on a free seat, and after the seat's own lock-in (3 to 20 days) with a dedicated seat. Paid jobs from outside clients, paid in USDC and never locked, are planned next, and are planned to go to Macs with dedicated seats first.
3What it costs to run
The main cost is electricity. Apple Silicon is efficient: an M4 Mac mini draws about 4 W at idle and up to 65 W at full processor load (Apple). Even flat out around the clock, that is about 1.6 kWh a day, roughly 29 cents at the average US home price of 18.3 cents per kWh (EIA, July 2026). Real AI work usually draws less than the maximum.
Laptops add battery wear if they work unplugged, which is why MLX can pause whenever the Mac is on battery. Our guide to Mac power consumption has the figures for every Mac mini and Mac Studio.
4What to expect, honestly
Any app that pays your Mac is paying from somewhere: advertisers, buyers of compute, or a token. Ask which before you install.
With MLX the payment is MLX Tokens from a fixed compute pool. Their value in dollars depends on what people pay for MLX, which can fall as well as rise. Earnings are not income you can count on, and you should never buy a dedicated seat with money you can't afford to lose. The risk disclosure explains the rest.
5Questions
- Can a Mac mini make money on its own?
- Yes, a little, with apps that use its spare capacity. The option that suits a Mac mini best is AI work, because it has fast unified memory and low power draw. MLX Node is free and earns MLX Tokens for verified AI work.
- Is it safe to leave my Mac working overnight?
- Apple Silicon Macs are built to run under load and throttle before they overheat. With MLX you can set limits so it pauses on battery or when the Mac gets warm, and MLX.app on iPhone tells you if a Mac stops.
- How much can I earn?
- With MLX Node, up to 1 MLX a day on a free seat and up to 20 MLX a day with a Core seat, more with bigger seats. What that's worth in dollars depends on the MLX price, which moves. Nothing is guaranteed.
- Do I need to buy anything?
- No. MLX Node is free and mines on a free seat. A dedicated seat is optional; it multiplies what a Mac of its class earns.
