Sell your computing power.

AI companies spend fortunes on compute, and many people have powerful computers sitting idle. Here is how renting out spare compute actually works, and where a Mac fits in.

Updated

The short version

  • Compute marketplaces pay you to run other people's workloads on your machine.
  • Most are built for Nvidia graphics cards on Windows or Linux, so Macs are rarely supported or chosen.
  • AI inference, running models on prompts, is the workload that suits Apple Silicon best.
  • MLX Network is built for Macs only: MLX Node runs AI work and earns MLX Tokens.

1Why compute is worth selling

AI runs on compute, and there isn't enough of it. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta planned to spend more than $700 billion on capital expenditure in 2026, much of it for AI infrastructure (Sherwood News). Data center electricity use grew sharply in 2025 (IEA).

Meanwhile, hundreds of millions of capable computers sit idle most of the day. Spare-compute networks try to connect the two.

2How compute marketplaces work

  1. You install a client that measures your hardware and offers it to the network.
  2. Buyers send jobs: rendering, training, inference or batch processing.
  3. Your machine runs the job in an isolated environment and returns the result.
  4. The network checks the work and pays you, in dollars, credits or a token.

The hard parts are trust and fit. Buyers need to know the work was done correctly, and the job has to suit your hardware. A job that needs an Nvidia graphics card with 24 GB won't run on a laptop, however fast.

3Why most marketplaces skip Macs

Most AI software was written for Nvidia's CUDA, which Macs don't run. That's why most GPU rental platforms list Nvidia cards and little else.

But Apple Silicon has an unusual advantage for AI inference: the processor and graphics share one large pool of fast memory. A Mac Studio with M5 Ultra holds up to 512 GB at 1.2 TB/s (Apple), enough to run models with hundreds of billions of parameters on one machine. Apple's own MLX framework is built to use it (GitHub).

So Macs are good at AI work. What they've lacked is a network built for them.

4Selling Mac compute with MLX Network

MLX Network is a compute network for Apple Silicon only. Work is placed by memory and bandwidth rather than raw speed, so every job runs whole on one Mac. Answers are checked against other Macs, and every hour the network pays MLX Tokens for the verified work.

  • Install MLX Node, free, on any Mac with an M-series chip.
  • Link a passkey wallet. Your earnings and your Mac's work are on the public ledger.
  • Choose when it works, or let it work after the Mac is idle, with battery and heat limits.
  • Optionally add a dedicated seat matched to your Mac's chip to multiply what it earns.

Today the network pays from its compute pool in MLX Tokens, locked for 30 days from the day they're earned (3 to 20 with a dedicated seat). Paid jobs from outside clients, paid in USDC and never locked, are planned next. The whitepaper explains how work is placed and verified.

5Questions

Can I rent out my Mac for AI?
Yes. Most GPU marketplaces are built for Nvidia hardware, but MLX Network is built for Apple Silicon Macs: MLX Node runs AI work for the network and earns MLX Tokens for verified results.
Will other people see my files?
No. MLX Node is a sandboxed app: it can reach the network and its own files, not your documents. Jobs are prompts for a model, and the answers go back to the network.
How is the work verified?
Each Mac's answers are compared with other Macs' answers to the same jobs, and the network also sends test jobs with known answers. Macs that disagree earn less or nothing.
Is selling compute passive income?
It's closer to a small, variable reward for lending your hardware. Earnings depend on how much your Mac works and on the value of what you're paid in. Nothing is guaranteed.
